How to Decorate a Cozy Corner: an easy formula for added seating in any room

How to Decorate a Cozy Corner: an easy formula for added seating in any room

So T-minus about 3 hours until my husband comes back from his conference and I’m no longer home alone.

The sun was shining this morning (although it’s super windy out), and I decided to spend a little more time in the cozy spot pictured above in my master bedroom- with my coffee in hand and some HGTV on. I’ve been binge-watching crap TV every night since he left. My shows of choice? The Bachelor, any County Housewife show, or Say Yes to the Dress. I thought I’d get over the bride shows after I got married- but 5 years later, I still like indulging in some wedding dress shopping shows. So this morning I’ve switched over to HGTV and I have to say my new favorite show is- Windy City Rehab. Love Allison’s style!!

Now, is there anything better than cuddling up on a chair with a blanket and coffee in hand? I love all things cozy so when I’m decorating- having a chair in the corner of most rooms (master bedrooms, guest rooms, and living rooms) is an absolute staple. It just adds instant cozy-ness, and the best part is it’s super easy to do.

This post will cover the ingredients for that perfect cozy corner, with suggestions on what and where to buy.

So my quick and easy formula for a Cozy Corner is:

Chair + Blanket + Pillow + small side table + decorative object

Chair

Price Range: $150- $500 and up depending upon what you’re looking for

Where to find them? The best places to find cozy chairs for $300 and under is at Homegoods, TJmaxx, or Marshall’s. If you’re not patient enough- or don’t have the time to drive to a bunch of different stores- then my go-to online places are: Wayfair, Joss and Main, All Modern, Overstock, Target and Pier 1. (Side Note: Wayfair, Joss and Main, All Modern, and Birch Lane are all the same company. So if you find a chair on one site, take a screenshot of it and search it on the sister sites- often times you’ll get a price difference of at least $20 even though it’s the same product).

The chair pictured above I scored for $300 at HomeGoods a few years back, and I see it all the time on Wayfair/ Joss and Main for between $400-$450.

What to look for? My rules for chairs are- 1) make sure they’re wide enough to cuddle up on to some extent. For example- you don’t just want to buy a dining chair with arms, because often they’re a foot to a foot and a half less wide than a traditional arm chair. If it’s a kid’s room- a slipper chair or a fun hammock chair would do and 2) By it in a neutral color like beige or grey, so if your color scheme changes- all you have to do is switch out the throw pillow and blanket to change up the look of the chair.

Check out some of the chairs I saw last night at the HomeGoods and TJMaxx in Monroe, NY:

Throw Pillow

Price Range: $16.99- $19.99

Where to buy? The best place for throw pillows is HomeGoods, TJmaxx, or Marshall’s.

What to look for? My rules for pillows on armchairs are as follows: 1) I tend to gravitate towards longer lumber pillows for arm chairs. Occasionally I’ll buy square pillows- but no bigger than 20x20. 2) If you saw my post entitled: How Many Pillows? , I only buy pillows with down-inserts because they’re easier to fluff up, give that “pillow-chop-look” and don’t get flat overtime. 3) Since it’s an armchair- I hardly ever buy just a plain looking pillow. I tend to gravitate towards stripes, a saying, or just a fun-looking tassel pillow.

Here are some of my favorites available online from TJMaxx… but again, your best bet is to just go to your local HG/TJX/Marshalls, and you’re guaranteed to find a good throw pillow.

Here are some of my online favorites available from TJMaxx.com:

Throw Blanket

Price Range: $14.99- $19.99

Where to buy? The best place for throw blankets is again HomeGoods, TJMaxx, or Marshall’s. My favorite brands that are available here are: Thro by Marlo Lorenz and Max Studio.

What to look for? There’s no denying that I have a blanket problem in our house ( I own 36). When I’m looking for a blanket for an arm chair I look for ones that are 1) super soft and cuddly- (Marlo Lorenz's blankets always fit that bill) , and 2) easy to drape over the side of the chair (knit blankets always fit this bill).

Here are some of my favorites available online from TJMaxx…. but you can do MUCH better in person and there are many more color options. (Pink seems to be the color this season- which I’m not to big on).

Here are some of my online favorites available from TJMaxx.com:

Small Side Table

Price Range: $29.99- $49.99

Where to buy? I always do much better finding small side tables at TJmaxx or Marshall’s over HomeGoods (HG tends to have bigger items that fit more of a bedside table-bill than an arm chair. ) Hobby Lobby also has great small side tables this time of year for under $40.

What to look for? My rule for side tables next to arm chairs is that I like the top of the table to be shorter than the arm of the chair. I hate hate hate, when a tall side table is next to a chair- it just doesn’t look right. Ceramic or metal “Garden Stools” are a great alternative option to a traditional side table- and can often be found at TjMaxx, Marshall’s, and HomeGoods for under $50 this time of year.

Decorative Object

Price Range: Under $10

What do I mean by a decorative object? Something that will sit on the small side table- have it be a small fake plant, picture frame, or some books. Having something on the side table will make this spot look more inviting.

Other Suggestions

Small throw rug:

If your chair sits off in a corner all by itself, often times I’ll purchase a small rug (2x3 or 3x5 in size) to sit under the front legs of the chair. Fun rugs for under $20 can easily be found at HG, TJX or Marshall’s. Hobby Lobby also recently upped their small throw rug game- try them too!

and/ or

Pouf/ Ottoman to put your feet up on:

There are sooo many cute poufs available now in different patterns at these Home Decor stores that are the perfect addition to put your feet up on. Check some of my favorites out here:

And there’s your “formula” to add the perfect cozy spot to any room!

Enjoy your weekend :)
